American Rivers

     back to Who's Who

American Rivers is a stakeholder at the KBRA /  Klamath Basin Restoration Agreement negotiation table

"To ensure that our nation’s rivers are protected, we focus on: Preventing harmful and destructive projects such as logging, mining, drilling or damming. We must ensure the nation’s long-term water supply through: Blocking expensive and inefficient water storage projects that will damage rivers without providing substantial community benefits"

Dam removal in Washington part of growing movement, Banger Daily News, posted to KBC 9/18/11. "What once seemed radical is now mainstream,” said American Rivers President Bob Irvin, whose group has advocated dam removal for environmental reasons. “All of these are experiments in how nature can restore itself, and the Elwha is the biggest example of that.” The pace of removal has quickened, with 241 dams demolished between 2006 and 2010, a more than 40 percent increase over the previous five years...A drumbeat of litigation by tribes and environmental groups has pushed federal officials to dismantle some dams that otherwise would have remained in place. (KBC NOTE: American Rivers is an exclusive KBRA stakeholder voting member. George Soros helps fund Earthjustice, who pays for American Rivers attorney fees. Earthjustice also pays the bills for other environmental groups on the KBRA "stakeholder" voting members, and also those opposed, yet all in the same coalitions: PCFFA, Klamath Wildlands, Karuk Tribe, Oregon Wild, ....." Some are still in litigation against Klamath Basin irrigators. American Rivers and many KBRA voting "stakeholders" and opposing groups are in the coalition to destroy the Snake and Colombia River dams.

House Republicans Send Letter Raising Concerns Over President Obama’s Nominee for Fish, Wildlife and Parks Assistant Secretary, posted to KBC 7/23/11. "The letter raises serious concerns over Ms. Wodder based upon her long-time record at the Wilderness Society and American Rivers, as well as the foreseeable conflict of interest as a political appointee working on regulations and contracts with her prior employers. American Rivers has been party to 150 lawsuits against various parties, including the federal government. In fact, the organization has lawsuits currently pending against some of the federal government’s land and water plans operated in part by the Interior Department." Choice for interior official too controversial to stand,"Wodder's 16 years as CEO of American Rivers makes her an especially poor choice." posted to KBC 6/24/11. "Most troubling, Ms. Wodder's continued pursuit of dam removal and statements that extinction is imminent show she has missed or purposefully ignored the massive effort made to protect and recover salmon species and the amazing success in increasing the returns of listed stocks...As the Department of the Interior's lead conservationist, Wodder would supervise the Fish and Wildlife Service, the National Park Service and all Interior programs related to conservation."
