The unveiling of Phase II of the Veterans’ Wall in the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Museum of Local History will be held in conjunction with a Museum Open House and Benefit Barbecue beginning at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 30th,  in Tulelake, California.
Stephanie Loughry, l, and others

For this special one-day event, the Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Museum of Local History at 800 South Main Street will be open free to the public from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. Phase I of the beautiful tribute wall of veterans was completed in May of 2003. It consisted of 77 marble tiles etched with 331 names and 175 photos. Phase II adds another 71 photos and 67 names etched onto 20 marble tiles. A third phase is already in progress with names and photos being received to honor qualified veterans from Tulelake, Butte Valley, Merrill and Malin. It will not be completed for at least another year. The cost remains $25 per name or $75 for name and photo.

Also on display within the Museum is a photo album, never seen publicly before, of photos taken by T. Shimoda, Director of Photography at the Tule Lake Internment Camp. Friends of the museum contributed to make the acquisition of this important piece of history possible. Newly acquired stereoview photos including the Modoc Indian War are also on display and may be viewed through a brand new, custom built stereoviewer. There are several other new displays within the museum. Summer hours for the Museum are: Monday through Saturday, 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, 1 p.m. to 5 p.m.

A delicious tri-tip barbecue "with all the trimmings" is being catered by Yummy’s Cowboy Cuisine from 1 p.m. to 3 p.m. in the Home Economics Building. Donations above the dinner cost will go to further improve the Museum. Make your reservation to attend this week! Advance sale prices are just $10 per plate. Call 530-667-5312 for details or stop by the Fair Office to make your purchase. Prices at the door will be $12 per person. Any donations above the cost of the meal will be gladly accepted and can be made to the fair's non-profit corporation: Tulelake-Butte Valley Fair Friends, Inc.

At 2 p.m., during the meal, special guest Stephanie Loghry will give a slide presentation about her experiences as a soldier in Iraq. Her photo and name appear on Phase II of the Veterans' Wall, joining her grandfather Woody Chambers who is on Phase I.

A silent auction of museum artifacts, which are being released from the museum's inventory as duplicate or unnecessary will begin on May 30th. Items will be on display at the fairgrounds and listed within the fair office. Bids will be accepted until 8:30 p.m. of the June 23rd Fair Board Meeting in Tulelake at the fair office.

Museums reflect the history of their communities. Let's not let any of our museums become history themselves. Support each of your museums. They provide education while instilling a sense of local pride and their benefits include bringing business through tourist visitations.
