Modoc among counties eligible for farm loans

In the wake of the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture's Oct. 23 designation of an emergency in Nevada, 10 contiguous California counties - including Modoc County - are eligible for emergency farm loans.

The federal loans will be extended in order to offset physical and production losses because of drought and insect infestation that began Jan. 1, 2003.

The other eligible California counties are Alpine, El Dorado, Inyo, Lassen, Mono, Nevada, Placer, San Bernardino and Sierra.

Farmers in these counties have until June 23 to apply for loans to help offset part of their actual losses. To be eligible, they must:

  • Have suffered at least a 30 percent loss of normal production directly related to the above-cited cause.
  • Be able to repay the loan and any other loans.
  • Be unable to obtain credit elsewhere.
  • Have adequate security.
  • Have multi-peril crop insurance, if available.

Modoc County applications should be filed with the Farm Service Agency in Alturas at 802 W. 12th St. For more information, call (530) 233-4391.
