Unemployment levels continue to climb in Modoc and Siskiyou counties, based on data for December from the California Employment Development Department.

Preliminary figures for December indicate 16.1 percent of people in Modoc County and 19 percent in Siskiyou County were unemployed, up from 15.2 percent and 17.6 percent, respectively, in November. In Siskiyou, 3,720 people were unemployed, up from 3,420 in November. In Modoc, 610 were unemployed, up from 590 in November. Statewide, the December unemployment rate was 12.2 percent.

In Modoc County, the heaviest job losses were in farm employment, a decline from 300 to 240, while jobs also declined in goods producing, service providing, leisure and hospitality, and federal and local government. The only increase was 10 more jobs in private service providing.

In Siskiyou County, sharp employment declines were reported for farming, mining and logging and federal government with additional job losses in goods producing, durable goods manufacturing, wholesale trade, professional and business services, and local government. Increases were reported in private service producing and leisure and hospitality, which added 160 jobs.
